Jeronimos Monastery

As I already said, Portugal is my dream country, and I will live there some day, for sure. Is a wish, a New Year resolution, a long time plan till we will move or at least spend there a month every year.

Some things don't come easy, isn't it?

We tried couple of times to visit Jeronimos Monastery, in Lisbon, but every time we went there, was closed. Last year, at last, we found it open, though it wasn't in the best shape for visiting and especially for taking pictures, due to a concert from the night before. Even like that, we deeply admired that magnificent shaped monastery, built in a late gothic style, called Manueline style.

The monastery  was built on the site of the Ermida do Restelo, a hermitage where Vasco da Gama and his men spent the night in prayer before departing to India in 1497. The construction of the actual monastery started in 1502 and it took 50 year to complete. It was meant to commemorate Vasco da Gama's succesful return from India and used also as a house of prayer for everybody transiting the port.
